The diabetic foot is fragile, particularly if it has deformities such as claw toes, thick nails, ingrown nails and/or complications such as neuropathy or arteriopathy. The slightest injury must be taken seriously to avoid infection as the risk of amputation is up to fifteen times greater in diabetic patients.
Orthonyxia consists of implanting a small metal brace or plate onto the dorsum of the nail which allows it to gradually find a correct angulation (shape), putting an end to ingrown nails while avoiding surgery. While managing ingrown nails is beneficial to anyone (to avoid pain, inflammation, and future surgery), managing them for diabetic patients is critical.
